SOLIDWORKS Design & Help

Created by Angel Ramirez on 9 March, 2018

Hello everyone,

I am working on the mechanical design of the handle (grip) part of a Type-2 EV charging plug according to IEC 62196-2 requirements.

This project is for a real R&D development process, and I am responsible for designing the ergonomic outer housing (tutamaç) of the connector — not the electrical section.

I already have:

  • The male insert dimensions
  • The locking system reference
  • The pin layout according to the standard

I need support in the following areas:

🔹 1. Ergonomic handle design references

Any sample models, ergonomic guidelines, or industrial design approaches.

🔹 2. Wall thickness + structural reinforcement suggestions

How to design the internal rib structure to meet durability.

🔹 3. Material selection

Recommended polymers for injection molding (PC+ABS, PA66 GF, TPE overmolding, etc.).

🔹 4. Example CAD models

If anyone has non-proprietary Type-2 connector handle geometries or simplified bodies that can be shared for reference, it would be very helpful.

I am designing the part in SolidWorks, so STEP or Parasolid files would also work.
