it is really quite simple, the photopshop file is a bit mapped image, that is made up of many very small colored dots. The stl file is a mathematically based model made up from mathematically defined surfaces. To produce software, to take many dots in a 2D form, to a precisely defined mathematical model of 3D surfaces, probably not possible to write software to do this automatically. 2D dots don't contain enough information.

I guess that is why it is called 2D and not 3D. Now, going to The Twilight Zone, I wonder if we should define Photoshop as a 2.5D solid surface or maybe 2D plus the range of 0.1 to 0.9

Photoshop formats are only dots. 2D vector formats, DXF SGV and the like being vectors, that is mathematically defined, are more versatile. There is software that will attempt to trace over a 2D bit mapped image but rarely produce a clean 2D vector based image. Making a usable 3D model from 2D bitmap images always requires reverse engineering.

I am no expert but cant photoshop save as SVG and I think you can convert that to a DWG, not n 3d printable format but one step closer ?

This is something I have been searching for a long time.

You have two options:

1) Use a website like Smoothie-3d or Selva3d, these sites allows you to upload a picture, create 3d model from the picture and then download an STL for printing.

2) If the image is flat form i.e. a logo then I use Autodesk Inventor. I create a new sketch load the image, trace over the image using the line and spline tools, then you can extrude to the thickness required. You can then export to the format you require.

The question is: the Photoshop picture presents all faces of the part?

If so, what about the internal hollows of that part?

And what about dimensions?
